Bruges Arcade

There are many beautiful sights and buildings in Bruges, some quite famous and some not. There is for example the big market square, dominated by a tall belfry tower and filled with cafes and tourists. There is also this arcade, which is just around the back of the building which supports the imposing belfry.

This arcade runs along towards one end of the charmingly named Oude Burg. Bruges itself is normally full of people, but in the evenings they tend to disappear from the streets, many of them no doubt into the many fine restaurants or bars found around the city. Hence this lamplit scene with no one in sight …

The shading and textures in this picture were a delight to draw, and for once I managed to fill the scene in the right order to avoid smudging some of the early work whilst finishing the other parts of the sketch!
