Venice by Lamplight

There is an almost infinite choice of vistas and objects to sketch in Venice. Nevertheless originality is still rather difficult since almost every wannabe artist who has visited the place in the last few centuries has had a go! So here, without any claim to originality whatsoever, is one of my contributions.

This scene is drawn in “charcoal” – the quote marks of course meaning that this was actually drawn on a drawing app using the “charcoal” tool, and no partially-burnt piece of wood has gone anywhere near this picture. The virtual “charcoal” doesn’t quite behave like the real stuff, but it’s not bad either and most of the normal charcoal effects can be created without the corresponding mess of charcoal dust and smudges. So we have a drawing of the lamplit atmosphere of the Venetian canals and footpaths without all the fuss – gets my vote …
