Milky Stork

We saw this chap in the Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur, although since I have elected not to paint any background I suppose the exact location is not really important.

I have always been impressed at how bold pictures can be created using very few colours. Initially I guess this was done to simplify the printing process, for example for posters. However, it is now a style in its own right (maybe called “grisaille”, although strictly speaking I think that style involves only shades of grey) and one that I like to try from time to time.

In this “painting” (ie done with a stylus using a drawing app on an iPad) I managed to use only three colours plus black, mid-grey and white to paint, and one additional colour as the backdrop. Which I suppose is actually seven colours in total. So perhaps in the early days of printing this would still have been difficult to reproduce, but nevertheless as an attempt to recreate this style of image I was content enough with the result.

  1. It certainly has the appearance of a print. A strong image.
