Reigate Priory – History

Reigate Priory was originally an Augustinian priory, founded in the 13th century. Following Henry VIII’s dissolution of religious foundations in the 16th century the building became a private residence. The Priory remained a private home until just after the end of the Second World War, when the buildings became a school. Although the extant structure was (re-)constructed after the dissolution, it is nevertheless classified as a Grade I listed building.

This drawing has a much shorter history. The pen sketch was originally made “en plein air” just after the last of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were lifted in the UK. This was my first experience of drawing with an audience, and I remember a lot of strangers coming to peer over my shoulder as I was working. However, upon reflection I think that these onlookers were not only curious about what I was sketching – post-lockdown they were also revelling in being able to see another human being in the flesh! The colouring was added much more recently using some electronic jiggery-pokery on a drawing app in the comfort of my own home. I think that the resulting image has more impact, although the qualities and faults of the original sketch are still clearly visible.
