Chair, Pouffe and Plant

Many of my recent watercolour paintings have actually been a combination of watercolour and pen. So I decided to try a simple watercolour-only painting, and these three objects were right in front of me at the time!

As you will be able to see, some aspects of this painting worked out well, others less so. For example, the composition is balanced and well positioned on the paper (neither of which is a given I might add!). Also the shape and form of the objects are easily seen despite the absence of any shape-defining pen marks. However, reflections from the shiny leather surfaces of the chair and pouffe are rather crudely done, due largely to my relative inexperience with watercolours. In addition, the floorboards had a mind of their own about which way to point, which initially screwed up the perspective, although I think that somehow I have just about managed to correct that.

It might not look it, but this really is a very comfortable chair – fortunately I have a second one to sit in whilst painting the one in the picture.
