Girona is a beautiful old city. It is a place apparently well known as the backdrop to a series of “Game of Thrones” – a popular drama series that I have never seen, but which apparently many others have enthusiastically watched. Girona is also on a high speed train line from Barcelona, with an ultramodern station buried in a tunnel deep underground.
This painting is of one of the “Alta Velocidad Espanola” or AVE trains just pulling into Girona station. I have previously tried to get this photo shot angle of a Japanese shinkanzen train and a French TGV, but this is the best picture of such a train that I have taken so far. I decided to try a monochrome watercolour of this scene to reflect the simple starkness of the station, which I think in general has worked. I was also rather pleased by the perspective, although clearly I still have a long way to go on my brushwork!
