On our way back home recently, after visiting a Van Gogh exhibition in London, we found ourselves waiting for a train at Blackfriars Station. The view from the southbound platform (which spans the Thames) is always inspiring, and on this occasion at dusk the view was more than a bit like Vincent’s painting “Starry Night over the Rhone” that we had seen earlier that day.
Now I freely admit that there is very little in common and no comparison between this painting and Van Gogh’s masterpiece. Nevertheless it was fun to paint, some bits of the scene actually look like I intended them to, and overall I find that looking at the painted scene feels rather like looking at the real view – so in many ways a success!
