Nikko (日光市)

Nikko is a popular tourist site in the mountains to the north of Tokyo, full of superb shrines and temples, nearby a picturesque lake and several onsen (hot springs), and at this time of year full of autumn colours. There is also this bridge, which no longer carries any traffic but which (for obvious reasons) can get quite full of young Japanese couples dressed in traditional costumes to have their photos taken.

Apparently there is a Japanese saying

“Never say kekko (splendid, excellent) until you’ve seen Nikko”

which I think referred originally to the splendour of the nearby shrines. I would certainly advise seeing the real thing rather than just viewing this palette knife painting, which captures the colours we saw last week but is faithful to little else in this beautiful scene!

One response to “Nikko (日光市)”

  1. This is how I always imagined the railway as a child. A beautiful picture.
