Loosely based on a photo taken on Mirissa Beach in Sri Lanka, here is another experiment using watercolours and quite a lot of water. Once again my first attempt was too wet, meaning that the background trees grew enormous as they spread over most of the sky! This second version was closer to damp rather than wet and so the trees have spread very little beyond their intended size.
Overall I quite like the scene I have painted, but it doesn’t look hot enough. After some consideration I have decided this is probably due to the sky being too pale – more the colour of an English summer sky that I am used to seeing, rather than the tropical blue found in travel brochure pictures and (occasionally) my holiday photos.
