Sandpit

There are many quarries near where I live. A few of these sites are still being worked, but most are now inactive. In this region (and quite possibly elsewhere too) a disused quarry will tend to turn into a lake, so we have several man-made lakes around here as well. The lake that I have painted in this picture used to supply sand – but now as Buckland Park Lake it supplies a range of leisure and recreational services instead. It even comes complete with a rustic (former) industrial building to add interest to the scene.

I have returned to acrylic paints for this picture, applied as ever with palette knives. As previously mentioned this is a very satisfying medium to work with, at least for the bigger bolder strokes – admittedly it can be a bit frustrating adding fine detail with the tip of a knife. I was quite pleased with the lighting effect in the scene, less happy about how some of the trees on the promontory turned out …
