The Galata Tower in Istanbul is now almost 700 years old. Today it dominates a hillside otherwise covered in a jumble of more modern and more modest buildings, the tower still offering the views it was designed to give over the city and the surrounding crossroads of land and sea routes.
In my head (weird place – tread carefully!) this scene has something of a fairy tale quality to it, probably something to do with the design of the tower. So I decided that this view would look good rendered in the style of a stained glass window. I quite like the resulting picture, although having actually looked at some real stained glass windows when I was about half way through this drawing, I realise that my image flouts many of the practical constraints of a real stained glass window!
