The Christmas Market in Strasbourg was busy enough this year, but the punters tend to favour afternoons and evenings for their festive purchases, so earlier in the day it is still possible to find quiet streets even near the city centre. This street (Rue de l’Epine) was genuinely empty when my phone snapped this photograph – it’s not just that I was too lazy to paint the people in!
I had intended to make this quite a simple and quick sketch, but true to form the detail sucked me in and so this painting is much more developed than I intended. However, I was always very happy with the composition of this view, so I think the picture can take my overworking in its stride.
