Sundial

Sundials work better on some days than others. This one in the gardens at Polesden Lacey was working on the day that we saw it, for the simple reason that the sun was shining. Curiously however it was not quite showing the correct time – even after making allowance for the fact that our watches are currently on British Summer Time, whereas around here the time according to the sun is always going to be Greenwich Mean Time.

I’m not completely sure what the cherubs under the dial are supposed to be doing. In the end I decided that they are dancing, although whether I have managed to draw that I’m not quite sure.

  1. You can have GMT or BST – it just depends on how you calibrate it ( assuming you can mark the hours on the dial face)

    1. Well this one appeared to be neither, although it was closer to GMT! :-/

  2. If the gnomon isnt set correctly then the time it shows is all over the place.
