Trichromatic Safari

Two things surprised me on a short safari that I took in Sri Lanks to see their native elephants* in the wild:

  • The first was just how many other groups were chasing around the park looking for the same elephants that we were searching for – although I suppose that is just down to the economics of the safari business.
  • The second was the extreme indifference the elephants displayed to us all when we found and approached them – which was just as well given the first point above!

I decided to try a multi-monochrome technique with this picture – “multi” becoming “three” in this case as I perceived three components to the image – the elephant, the onlookers and the forest/grassland backdrop. The three colours that I chose turned out to be even more discordant than I had planned, but perhaps that is just as well as it serves to emphasise how I felt about the 4×4 vehicles that had invaded the natural space. I hasten to add though, that I don’t see how it could be otherwise unless I was willing to pay a lot more for my own safari experience!

(* Elephas maximus maximus apparently)
