Sunset at Galle

Sooner or later I am sure that my watercolour paints will do exactly what I want them to do, but in the meanwhile I have to be content if a watercolour painting bears even a passing resemblance to the image that I have in my head! This sunset is no exception – I was quite pleased with the palm trees but the rest of the scene lacks the drama that I had hoped it would have.

The scene depicted is the view from the western ramparts of the Portuguese/Dutch fort at Galle in Sri Lanka, where the ever popular “end of the day” show had gathered locals and tourists alike. The real sunset was spectacular – shame the same can’t be said about this painting! :-/

  1. Are you using pans or tubes of watercolour? It looks like pans from here. Tubes give you lashings of watercolour and if you use professional tubes, you get loads of colour. Big brushes and lots of compartments on your palette will also help to get your painting the way you want it to be.

    1. I’m using tubes, but currently a mix of cheap (starter paints) and more expensive paints. Only replacing with more expensive tubes, in the hope that I learn how to use them in the meanwhile!
I think one issue might be that I am still only using A4 paper – it occurs to me that I would have more more space &/or need to do less fiddly things if the paper was larger – perhaps I’d also be more comfortable with the bigger brushes you mention if I had more space to play with.
Anyway, many thanks for the tips – I’ll try and see how I can benefit from them. 🙏

  2. A4 is small, but not too small. It is cotton watercolour paper, is it? not cartridge paper?

Proper watercolour paper is quite important for good effects.

    1. It is an “Artist Watercolour Pad” from Amazon – not expensive so probably not the cotton watercolour paper you are recommending. I’m quite happy to upgrade the paper if it is an issue – watch this space to see where that makes any difference!
      Again – many thanks.
