Primroses

The plants which grow best in my garden are those that are often labelled as weeds! I’m not sure whether primroses are normally classified by others in this way, but given how vigorously they self-seed and then grow in my lawn they seem to fit the bill. However, they have the advantage of being colourful heralds of spring, so “weeds” or not I tend to tolerate and even at times to encourage them.

I thought they would make a good subject for a simple pen and colour wash picture, and to a large extent I think this painting shows that is true. The subject also seems timely, given that today is Mothering Sunday.

  1. I bought 10 plugs of our native primroses a few years ago and have been surprised how they have multiplied in my garden. Though they have a lovely flower – as you have depicted – and are a great harbinger of spring.
