Matthew’s gospel refers to the newborn Jesus by the prophetic name Emmanuel, which means “God with us”. A simple yet profound concept, but one that is hard to draw! John’s gospel has a more metaphysical take on the whole nativity story, yet similarly tells us that “the Word [of God] became flesh and dwelt among us” – no easier to sketch out on paper than Matthew’s version!
However, John’s gospel also says that the Word is a light that “shines in the darkness” – now that I can draw. So, like countless others before me who were inspired by similar words, I have drawn a candle shining in the darkness, with the word “Emmanuel” squeezed onto the wick.
So, a Christmas inspired picture that doesn’t feature a stable, nor any snow, nor even a magical sleigh. Enjoy …
