Ye Olde Shoppe

To be honest I’m not really sure quite how old this shop is. It is certainly built in an older style than the two concrete blocks that hem it in, and it probably helps that I’ve drawn it slightly wonky, giving it that twisted look that most really old buildings have! As a final coup de grâce in the ageing process I have tweaked the colouring of what was originally a black pen drawing to give a sepia effect.

The contrast of building styles between this shop and its neighbours means that nearly every tourist in Matsumoto who wanders past will take a photo or two, including me. Not everyone then turns their holiday snaps into sketches of course, but the intricacy of the roof design appealed to me …

    Nice work. The wonkiness and colour shift only add to it’s charm. But you have to be wary of old buildings. There was an old timber framed building ( a pub) in my home town that attracted a lot of tourist attention – but it was built in the 1960s from material salvaged from the demolition of an old church – but very effective it was too – even the interior.

      Thanks. I was careful not to claim any particular age for this building, just in case. Very little is truly old in Japan because of the frequent earthquakes, but quite a few buildings are restored …
