Suur Toll & Piret

This statue of a mythical couple, who once upon a time helped the Saaremaa islanders of old, is just opposite the Kuressaare hotel we were staying in during our tour of Estonia. The legends of these two seem to major on saving the island from invaders and the husbandry of cabbages, although this sculpture clearly shows the two with a great haul of fish.

I started this sketch whilst still travelling but then became disenchanted with it and moved on to other drawings, some of which have already been posted. However, lacking inspiration as to what to draw whilst with my art group this week, I decided to try and rescue this drawing. It’s not perfect, but I’m glad I finished it anyway as it brings back some good memories of our trip.

  1. Actually, when I first saw this, I thought that they were moving their lilo to a sunnier spot.

  2. What a beautiful reminder that art is not always about perfection—it is often about preserving a feeling, a place, and a moment in time. 🎨🌿

I love that you returned to a sketch you had once abandoned and gave it another chance. Perhaps it was waiting for you to come back with a little more inspiration and patience. 😊
