Blow Your Own Trumpet

Normally the phrase “blow your own trumpet” has nothing to do with making music with a horn, but rather implies a degree of self-aggrandisement. However, we recently went to see a musician friend of ours literally “blow his own trumpet” (in a rather modest way!) as part of a very entertaining tribute band.

The three brass players not only played well together, they also had a well rehearsed and lively choreography – although I have painted them here in a relatively static pose, at a moment when they are blowing for all they are worth!

I am quite pleased with the light and shade in this painting. Indeed I could almost believe these players are spotlit. However, as usual the paintwork is rather scrappy in places …
